Born in Belgrade in 1946, Marina Abramović is one of the leading figures in performance art. Since the 1970s, she has challenged the conventions of art by placing her own body at the center of extreme experiments, exploring the limits of pain, passivity and the relationship with the audience. With seminal works such as Rhythm 0 (1974), The Artist is Present (MoMA, 2010) and her iconic collaborations with Ulay, she has transformed the act of performance into an intense, often unsettling, but always essential encounter.
For the Paper Tube Studio (PTS), Marina Abramović presents Counting the Rice, a participative experience in which the work is shaped by the endurance of the visitor. Visitors are invited to sit at the table and patiently separate grains of rice and lentils- a simple, meditative gesture that calls for attention, rigor and self-awareness. Through this repetitive process, everyone can experience art as a vehicle for concentration, introspection and transformation.
Based in New York, where she founded the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), the artist continues her research around consciousness, ritual and endurance. Through demanding protocols, she transmits to new generations a vision of art as a living, spiritual and profoundly human gesture.
