The organisation

The Centre Pompidou-Metz has the status of an Établissement Public de Coopération Culturelle (EPCC) whose members are Greater Metz, Lorraine Region, City of Metz, the Centre Pompidou and the French State.

This guarantees the Centre’s autonomy in its scientific and cultural choices, the support and control of local government which provides funding, and its affiliation with the Centre Pompidou as an associated body.

The operational budget is wholly funded by the partner authorities. Expenditure for the first year has been estimated at €10 million, of which €4.6 million from Greater Metz, €4 million from the Lorraine Region, €400,000 from the City of Metz and €1 million to be self-financed. The Moselle Conseil Général will examine a partnership agreement with the Centre Pompidou-Metz on a yearly basis.

The Centre Pompidou and the French State together hold one third of the seats on the Centre Pompidou-Metz board of directors. The remaining seats are held by Greater Metz, Lorraine Region and the City of Metz. The president of the Moselle Conseil Général sits on the board of directors in his capacity as a qualified individual.

The President of the board of directors is Alain Seban, President of the Centre Pompidou. The Vice-President is Jean-Luc Bohl, President of Greater Metz.

The Director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz is Laurent Le Bon, Chief Curator of the Musée National d’Art Moderne and currently Director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz Preparatory Association.

As described in the regulations governing the operation of EPCCs, the director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz enjoys considerable autonomy with regard to matters of a cultural or scientific nature. In compliance with the French General Local Authorities Code, the director is appointed by the president of the EPCC in accordance with a nomination received from the board of governors, chosen by a two-thirds majority.

The EPCC board of directors consists of 26 members as follows:
- French State and Centre Pompidou: 8 seats
- Qualified individual appointed by the president of the Centre Pompidou: 1 seat
- Greater Metz: 7 seats
- Lorraine Region: 5 seats
- City of Metz: 1 seat
- Mayor of Metz: 1 seat
