Announcement by the Centre Pompidou and City of Metz, in agreement with the French Ministry of Culture and Communication: the Centre Pompidou’s first decentralised cultural centre will be built in Metz.

March 18, 2003

Launch of the international architecture competition.

May 27, 2003

Shortlisting of six teams of architects.

November 26, 2003

Jury meeting to examine the six finalists’ projects.

December 15, 2003

Confirmation of the winning project management team by the Metz Metropole Council: Shigeru Ban (Tokyo), Jean de Gastines (Paris) and Philip Gumuchdjian (London).

June 2004

Presentation of the summarised preliminary design.

June 2005

Approval of the final preliminary design.

September 2005

Building permit obtained.

Automn 2005

Final design presentation with contractor specifications for the launch of calls for tender.

2006-2009

Start of work on the building and neighbouring areas.

2010

Inauguration of the Centre Pompidou-Metz.
