At the crossroads of Europe

Metz is the capital of Lorraine and is situated near Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. As close to Paris as it is to Frankfurt, Metz is truly a European city.

The city of Metz has always been a crossroads between two of Europe’s greatest routes: the North Sea-Mediterranean route, from Amsterdam to Marseilles, and the Paris-Eastern Europe route leading to Munich, Prague and Vienna.

The Metz region is easily accessible thanks to first-class infrastructure. The Centre Pompidou-Metz will attract visitors from all over Europe via the North-South motorway corridor and the three airports situated at less than an hour’s drive away (at Metz-Nancy-Lorraine, Luxembourg and Saarbrücken). From June 2007, the TGV-East’s high-speed trains will shorten the journey from central Paris to Metz to 90 minutes.

This exceptional geographical location was a decisive factor in selecting Metz as the city to manage France’s first major cultural decentralisation project.
